E3 Mulls Activating Snapback Mechanism Against Iran

Diplomatic sources reveal that Britain, France, and Germany (E3) are considering triggering the snapback mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions on Iran due to concerns about its nuclear program. This move aims to pressure Tehran to provide clear commitments regarding its nuclear ambitions within a 30-day timeframe.

The move follows a meeting between the E3 and Iran in an attempt to revive diplomatic negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program before the ability to reimpose sanctions is lost in mid-October. These sanctions were lifted after the signing of the Iranian nuclear deal in 2015.

European and Western diplomats stated that Tuesday's meeting did not yield concrete results in terms of obtaining specific commitments from Iran, prompting the E3 to decide to activate the "rapid sanctions restoration" mechanism in the UN Security Council due to accusations that Iran violated the 2015 agreement aimed at preventing it from developing nuclear weapons.

International Verification and Potential Iranian Response

In another development, IAEA inspectors have returned to Iran after a suspension of cooperation between the parties since the attacks targeting Iranian nuclear facilities in June. Although inspectors were allowed entry, no agreement was reached on the scope of their work and access to nuclear facilities.

The E3 has offered to postpone the activation of the sanctions reinstatement mechanism for up to six months if Iran resumes cooperation with the IAEA and begins negotiations with the United States, which could provide an opportunity for serious negotiations.

However, Iran has warned that it will respond "forcefully" if sanctions are reimposed. This tension comes amid reports that Iran has enriched uranium to 60%, a percentage close to weapons-grade, and possesses enough of this material to make several nuclear weapons if further enriched.

Potential Ramifications

The question remains: will these developments lead to an escalation of tension between Iran and Western powers? Will diplomatic efforts succeed in reviving the Iranian nuclear deal and preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons? These questions remain pending as future developments unfold.
