Introduction to Continuous Clearing Auction (CCA)

Uniswap and Aztec have collaborated to launch a novel protocol called the Continuous Clearing Auction (CCA), which aims to streamline new asset price discovery and provide a smoother liquidity launch. The CCA is specifically designed for projects looking to establish fair prices for their new assets and create sustainable liquidity from the outset.

Addressing Price Discovery Challenges

Traditionally, projects have faced several approaches to pricing new assets, including airdrops, Dutch auctions, fixed-price sales, and bonding curves. However, these methods often suffer from randomness, time sensitivity, or an inability to provide continuous liquidity. CCA seeks to address these issues by providing a more equitable and sustainable price discovery mechanism.

How CCA Works

CCA operates as a standalone framework for asset issuance and pricing but is designed to integrate seamlessly with Uniswap v4 through its hooks mechanisms. After the auction is completed, liquidity can be automatically injected into Uniswap v4 smart contracts, ensuring instant liquidity availability on secondary trading markets.

Aztec's Involvement and ZKPassport's Role

Aztec played a crucial role in the development of CCA, contributing to the mechanism design and being the first project to utilize CCA for token launch. Additionally, CCA can integrate KYC/compliance capabilities, as exemplified by Aztec's use of ZKPassport, an identity solution developed using Aztec's Noir language. ZKPassport enables compliance checks without revealing sensitive user details through the use of zero-knowledge proofs.

CCA Architecture

CCA provides a configurable auction framework, allowing projects to customize the rules according to their specific needs. Key steps in the CCA process include:

  1. Configuration Phase: The auction initiator configures parameters on-chain, such as start and end times, number of rounds, token allocation per period, minimum price (floor price), whitelist/identity verification requirements, and liquidity injection strategies into Uniswap v4.
  2. Bidding Phase: Participants can place bids at any time during the auction, specifying the amount of capital they are willing to commit and the maximum acceptable price. Bids can be adjusted repeatedly, and each order is processed independently.
  3. Allocation Phase: Bids are automatically spread across the remaining issuance periods, meaning earlier bids have the potential to participate in more clearing rounds.
  4. Clearing Phase: In each round, the system determines a uniform price that enables all tokens allocated for that round to be sold. Tokens are allocated to bids whose maximum prices exceed or equal the final price.
  5. Finalization: Upon completion of all rounds, participants can claim their allocated tokens and retrieve any unspent capital. The protocol then injects the collected assets and the project's assets into Uniswap v4, initiating liquidity on secondary trading markets.

Advantages and Benefits

CCA works by segmenting one-time auctions into smaller time slices, enabling continuous price discovery and reduced price volatility. This approach allows for a more fair representation of the asset's value and ensures a smoother and more sustainable liquidity launch.

Conclusion

The Continuous Clearing Auction (CCA) from Uniswap and Aztec represents an innovative solution to the challenges of new asset price discovery and liquidity launch. By offering a configurable auction framework and integrating compliance features, CCA aims to provide a fair and efficient mechanism for projects and participants alike.
