Why Is Super Micro Stock Surging?

Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) emerged as one of Tuesday’s strongest after-hours performers after the AI server manufacturer delivered a considerably better profitability outlook.

SMCI stock closed the regular session 7% higher at $25.50. It then surged another 17.5% in extended trading following the release of Super Micro’s preliminary fiscal fourth-quarter update.

The sharp move was primarily driven by an unexpected improvement in gross margin. Super Micro also revealed that it received more than $60 billion in new orders during the quarter, lifting its total backlog to a record level.

Together, the two announcements addressed major questions surrounding the company. Investors had been concerned about whether Super Micro could convert rapidly growing AI server demand into sustainable profits. The latest update suggests the company may be achieving stronger profitability while continuing to attract large data-centre orders.

Super Micro Raises Its Gross-Margin Forecast

Super Micro now expects both GAAP and adjusted gross margin to fall between 15% and 17% for the quarter ended 30 June. Its previous forecast had indicated a much lower range of 8.2% to 8.4%.

The midpoint of the new range is therefore almost twice the midpoint of the earlier forecast. Management attributed the change mainly to a favourable mix of customers and products, according to the company’s preliminary business update.

Gross margin measures how much revenue remains after accounting for the direct costs of producing and delivering the company’s products. For a server manufacturer, even a relatively small improvement can make a substantial difference because large hardware contracts may generate billions of dollars in revenue while operating on narrow margins.

The revised forecast also marks a significant improvement from previous quarters. Super Micro reported a GAAP gross margin of 9.9% in its fiscal third quarter, following 6.3% in the second quarter, according to its fiscal third-quarter results.

A fourth-quarter result between 15% and 17% would suggest that Super Micro’s margin recovery accelerated considerably during the final three months of fiscal 2026.

However, gross margin does not represent final profit. Operating expenses, financing costs and taxes still need to be deducted before calculating net income. The full earnings release will therefore be important for determining how much of the margin improvement reached the company’s bottom line.

More Than $60 Billion in Orders Strengthens the AI Demand Outlook

The second major catalyst for Super Micro stock was the company’s order update.

Super Micro received more than $60 billion in new orders during the fiscal fourth quarter. The volume pushed its total backlog to a record level at the end of fiscal 2026.

These orders are expected to be delivered over future quarters, meaning they should not be treated as $60 billion of revenue for the June quarter. Nevertheless, the figure gives Super Micro greater visibility into future sales and indicates that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong.

Technology companies, cloud service providers and data-centre operators continue to invest in computing systems used to train and run artificial intelligence models. Super Micro supplies servers and complete data-centre systems that can be configured with high-performance processors, including Nvidia graphics processing units.

The new order figure also provides additional context for Super Micro’s recent financing plans. In June, the company announced approximately $7 billion in equity and equity-linked financing to help purchase components for advanced AI server orders.

At the time, Super Micro said it had received approximately $39 billion in orders from more than 20 customers. The latest quarterly total indicates that order activity continued to increase after the financing announcement.

The additional funding could help the company secure processors, memory, cooling equipment and other components required to complete large AI data-centre projects. However, issuing new equity or securities that can convert into shares may also dilute existing shareholders.

Revenue Guidance Remains Near the Lower End

Despite the stronger margin and order updates, Super Micro did not raise its quarterly revenue forecast.

The company continues to expect revenue within its previous range of $11 billion to $12.5 billion. Management said the final figure would probably be near the lower end of that range.

Analysts had projected quarterly revenue of approximately $11.67 billion, according to market estimates. Revenue close to $11 billion would therefore fall below the consensus forecast, even though it would remain within Super Micro’s official guidance.

The stock’s positive reaction shows that investors placed greater importance on profitability and future orders than on the softer sales estimate. Higher margins could allow Super Micro to generate more gross profit from its revenue, partially offsetting the effect of sales finishing near the bottom of the range.

The timing of order deliveries may also explain the difference between the record order volume and the more cautious revenue estimate. Large data-centre contracts can take several quarters to complete, particularly when customers require customised systems, advanced cooling technology or access to high-demand AI processors.

AI Server Stocks Gain Alongside SMCI

Super Micro’s announcement also supported other companies exposed to AI infrastructure spending. Dell Technologies and Hewlett Packard Enterprise traded higher after the closing bell as investors interpreted the $60 billion order figure as another sign of strong demand for AI servers.

The sector-wide reaction suggests the update was not viewed solely as a company-specific development. Major technology groups and cloud providers are still expanding data-centre capacity, creating demand for servers, networking equipment, memory chips, storage products and cooling systems.

However, Super Micro’s sharp margin improvement may be more specific to its own customer and product mix. The company did not suggest that the entire server industry was experiencing the same increase in profitability.

Super Micro Earnings on August 11 Could Test the Rally

Super Micro is scheduled to release its complete fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year results on 11 August 2026. The report should confirm whether the final gross margin remained within the estimated 15% to 17% range and reveal the exact revenue figure.

Investors are also likely to focus on how quickly the company expects to convert its record backlog into sales. A large order pipeline supports future growth, but delivery schedules, component availability and customer concentration can influence when revenue is recognised.

Guidance for fiscal 2027 will be another major consideration. The market will want to determine whether the stronger margin reflects a temporary benefit from the quarter’s product mix or a more sustainable change in Super Micro’s business.

For now, Super Micro stock has become a top performer because the company delivered both stronger profitability expectations and evidence of continued AI server demand. The August earnings report will show whether those preliminary improvements can support the stock beyond its immediate after-hours rally.
