Super Micro Computer shares advanced about 8% in after-hours trading on Tuesday after the AI-server supplier reported a mixed top line but a materially stronger profit picture. Published readings varied by observation time.

Net sales for the quarter ended June 30 reached $11.12 billion, up roughly 93% from $5.76 billion a year earlier and about 9% from the preceding quarter. Revenue was approximately 3.7% below the $11.55 billion Visible Alpha consensus.
The shortfall carried less negative information than a typical miss because Supermicro had already said in July that sales were likely to finish near the lower end of its $11.0 billion to $12.5 billion range. Attention had shifted to profitability.
GAAP net income increased to $1.18 billion, or $1.62 per diluted share, from $195 million, or $0.31 per share, a year earlier. Non-GAAP diluted earnings were $1.70 per share, compared with the $0.92 FactSet consensus reported by Barron's.
Gross margin was the central figure behind the positive reaction. GAAP gross margin rose to 17.5% from 9.9% in fiscal Q3 and 9.5% in the prior-year quarter. On an adjusted basis, the margin reached 17.6%, slightly exceeding the 15% to 17% range Supermicro provided in its July update and far above its earlier projection of 8.2% to 8.4%.
Management attributed the improvement primarily to a more favorable customer and product mix, including greater enterprise exposure and adoption of its Data Center Building Block Solutions architecture. That supports the prospect of better unit economics.
The result does not yet establish that a 17%-plus margin is sustainable. Fiscal 2026 gross margin was 10.8%, slightly below 11.1% in fiscal 2025, and the company did not provide a gross-margin target with its new quarterly outlook. The Q4 increase is therefore best viewed as evidence of recovery rather than confirmation of a settled long-term margin range.
Supermicro said it added several hundred customers over the past year, generated more than $60 billion in Q4 orders and entered fiscal 2027 with record backlog. That volume is significant relative to fiscal 2026 revenue of $39.1 billion.
The company expects fiscal Q1 revenue of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. The $15.0 billion midpoint implies sequential growth of approximately 35% and stands about 27% above the $11.8 billion FactSet consensus cited after the announcement. Management projected non-GAAP earnings of $1.01 to $1.10 per diluted share, also above the pre-release consensus.
For fiscal 2027, Supermicro forecast sales of $65 billion to $72 billion. The midpoint of $68.5 billion would represent growth of about 75% from fiscal 2026 and is roughly 30% above the $52.5 billion average estimate compiled by LSEG.
There is, however, a notable tension within the outlook. The midpoint of Q1 adjusted EPS is below the $1.70 reported in Q4 even though revenue is projected to rise sharply. Without explicit margin guidance, the comparison cautions against mechanically extending the fourth quarter's unusually strong profitability into subsequent periods.
The extended-hours advance suggests investors raised the probability that Supermicro can combine growth with improved profitability. It does not show that execution, governance or funding concerns have disappeared. The sales miss had been partly signalled, while the margin result and guidance improved the expected earnings path. The move therefore reflected a repricing of future execution, although the less-liquid after-hours market can amplify price changes.
The backlog figure requires careful interpretation. In its July update, Supermicro cautioned that some orders might not constitute firm commitments and could be subject to cancellation or delay. Management also attributed some delivery timing issues to customers' power, cooling and networking readiness. Subsequent revenue conversion—not headline order intake alone—will determine the economic value of that backlog.
Cash flow is another important test. Supermicro generated $747 million of operating cash in Q4, but used $6.81 billion over the full fiscal year. The annual cash-flow statement showed an $8.88 billion use of cash associated with inventory and a $3.92 billion use tied to receivables. At June 30, the company held $7.52 billion in cash and equivalents against approximately $8.72 billion of bank debt and convertible notes.
Investors must also account for the status of the numbers themselves. Supermicro described the results as preliminary and unaudited, said its financial closing work was incomplete and disclosed that its independent auditor had not audited or reviewed the data. The board was also continuing an independent review of certain transactions connected with export-control issues, an outcome the company said could affect forecasts or reported periods.
Fiscal Q1 will test the revised narrative. Key indicators include backlog conversion, gross margin, inventory and receivables, operating cash flow and any update on the independent review.
Demand remained strong, profitability exceeded expectations and management set a much higher revenue trajectory. The guidance also raises the execution threshold: sustained confidence will depend on maintaining margins and converting orders into revenue and cash.
