Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company will report third-quarter earnings on Thursday, October 15, with record revenue already confirmed and investor attention shifting toward profitability, artificial intelligence demand and the company’s outlook for the final quarter of 2026.
TSMC’s US-listed shares ended Friday at approximately $453.31 after declining about 1%. The stock remains close to recent highs, reflecting confidence that spending by Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom and major cloud companies will continue driving demand for advanced chips.
However, elevated expectations create a demanding setup. With third-quarter sales already known, stronger margins and an upbeat forecast may be necessary to push TSM stock decisively higher.
TSMC will hold its third-quarter earnings conference on Thursday, October 15, from 2:00 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. Eastern Time, corresponding to 2:00 p.m. in Taiwan.
The results will therefore be available before the US stock market opens. TSMC entered its quiet period on October 5, preventing management from communicating with the investment community until the earnings release.
The report will have implications well beyond TSM stock. As the world’s largest contract chipmaker, TSMC manufactures processors for many of the companies leading the AI investment cycle. Its capacity utilization, advanced-node demand and capital-spending plans can provide early signals for Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, Apple and the wider semiconductor sector.
The main revenue surprise arrived before the full earnings report.
TSMC generated September revenue of NT$511.86 billion, up 54.6% from a year earlier but down 0.6% from August. Revenue for the first nine months of 2026 reached NT$3.90 trillion, representing annual growth of 41.1%.
Combined revenue for July, August and September reached approximately NT$1.49 trillion, equivalent to about $46.7 billion. That was roughly 51% higher than the NT$989.92 billion reported one year earlier.
The result exceeded the NT$1.46 trillion estimate compiled from 19 analysts. It also came in above TSMC’s previous dollar-denominated guidance of $44.6 billion to $45.8 billion.
Q3 2026 Metric | Result or Estimate |
|---|---|
Revenue | NT$1.49 trillion |
Revenue in US dollars | Approximately $46.7 billion |
Year-over-year revenue growth | Approximately 51% |
Previous company guidance | $44.6 billion to $45.8 billion |
September revenue | NT$511.86 billion |
September annual growth | 54.6% |
Estimated net profit | NT$740.8 billion |
Estimated gross margin | Approximately 66.5% |
An LSEG SmartEstimate places third-quarter net profit at approximately NT$740.8 billion, which would represent growth of about 64% from the same quarter in 2025.
TSMC occupies a central position in the AI supply chain because it manufactures the advanced processors designed by Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom and other chip developers.
Demand for AI accelerators has expanded beyond GPUs. Cloud companies and technology groups are increasingly developing custom application-specific chips for inference, networking and data processing. Many of these designs depend on TSMC’s leading manufacturing nodes and advanced packaging capacity.
The company’s high-performance computing business accounted for approximately two-thirds of revenue during the second quarter. That category includes AI accelerators, data-center CPUs and other powerful processors.
TSMC’s third-quarter revenue indicates that concerns about an immediate slowdown in AI infrastructure spending have not yet translated into weaker chip orders. September sales increased almost 55% from a year earlier even as investors questioned the sustainability of spending by hyperscale cloud companies.
The key issue on the earnings call will be whether management believes current demand represents long-term deployment or accelerated purchasing caused by fears of capacity shortages.
Investors will also look for updates on demand related to Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin platform, AMD’s accelerator roadmap and custom AI chips produced for major cloud providers.
Revenue has already exceeded expectations, making profitability the most important unknown in the report.
TSMC previously forecast a third-quarter gross margin between 65% and 67%, with an operating margin between 56% and 58%. Recent analyst estimates place the gross margin near 66.5%, toward the upper half of the company’s range.
The comparison with the second quarter is demanding. TSMC reported:
The second-quarter gross and operating margins exceeded the company’s original guidance, helped by high utilization, favorable product mix and cost improvements. The results also included a one-time investment gain, making the underlying sequential comparison less straightforward.
Several factors could pressure margins in the third quarter. New overseas factories initially operate at higher costs than established Taiwanese facilities, while an accelerating 2-nanometer production ramp could create temporary inefficiencies.
Foreign-exchange movements may also affect profitability because much of TSMC’s revenue is denominated in US dollars while a substantial portion of its costs is incurred in New Taiwan dollars.
A gross margin above 67% would probably be viewed as a significant positive surprise. A result near the lower end of the company’s range could raise concerns that overseas expansion and advanced-node investments are absorbing more of the revenue benefit.
Because quarterly revenue is already known, TSMC’s forecast for the final three months of the year may have a greater effect on its share price than the reported third-quarter numbers.
Investors will want to see whether demand remains strong enough to produce another sequential revenue increase. Analysts expect Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform, expanding custom-chip production and the 2-nanometer ramp to support continued growth.
Management’s full-year forecast will also be important. TSMC previously projected revenue growth of more than 40% for 2026 and increased its annual capital expenditure guidance to between $60 billion and $64 billion.
Another increase in the revenue or capital-spending outlook would suggest that management continues to see demand exceeding available advanced manufacturing and packaging capacity.
Investors should monitor four elements of the new guidance:
The strongest scenario for TSM stock would combine better-than-expected margins with an increase in fourth-quarter revenue guidance. Strong sales accompanied by weaker margins or cautious 2027 commentary could produce a more subdued reaction.
TSMC is investing aggressively outside Taiwan to meet customer and government demands for geographically diversified semiconductor production.
Its expansion in Arizona is strategically important, but new overseas facilities generally carry higher construction, labor and operating costs. Management has previously acknowledged that overseas production will dilute company-wide margins, although pricing, subsidies and productivity improvements may offset part of the effect.
TSMC must also fund the transition to more advanced technologies while expanding mature-node and packaging capacity. The scale of this investment helps strengthen its competitive position, but it increases execution risk if AI demand eventually slows.
Export restrictions represent another uncertainty. Tighter controls on advanced chip sales to China could limit some orders, while changes in US tariff or semiconductor policy could affect investment decisions and customer supply chains.
A bullish earnings outcome would probably require more than a headline revenue beat because record sales have already been disclosed.
Potential positive catalysts include:
TSM stock could struggle if management forecasts slower sequential growth, warns about customer inventory or signals that overseas expansion will reduce margins more rapidly than expected.
Valuation also raises the threshold for a positive surprise. TSM shares have risen substantially as investors priced in several years of AI-related growth. The stock’s decline following strong second-quarter results demonstrated that exceptional results can still disappoint when market expectations are even higher.
TSM stock enters the report near $453, below the recent technical breakout area around $479. A return above that region could strengthen the bullish trend and place the recent highs back in focus.
On the downside, the $450 area represents the first important support. A disappointing margin or outlook could push the stock toward the $430 to $440 region, particularly if Treasury yields remain elevated and pressure semiconductor valuations.
The broader analyst outlook remains positive, although price-target estimates vary considerably. One compilation places the average target near $525, with forecasts ranging from $330 to $665.

TSMC has already established that demand remains exceptionally strong. Third-quarter revenue reached a record NT$1.49 trillion and exceeded market expectations as AI accelerators, high-performance computing and advanced manufacturing continued to drive growth.
The October 15 report will determine whether that revenue surge translated into equally strong earnings and margins. More importantly, investors will examine whether management expects the AI investment cycle to continue supporting record sales into 2027.
TSM stock could extend its rally if TSMC reports a gross margin near or above 67% and issues another strong revenue forecast. However, elevated expectations mean that a routine earnings beat may not be sufficient. The outlook for margins, advanced capacity and next-generation AI demand will probably decide whether TSM shares move higher after the report.
