Key Takeaways

  • The S&P 500 fell 4.36% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 5.52% on November 5 as selling in AI infrastructure stocks spread across Wall Street.
  • Democratic election gains intensified concerns about data center approvals, while some Federal Reserve officials supported gradual interest rate increases.
  • Google’s $17 billion Wyoming investment and strong demand for Apple’s bond offering showed that investment and financing activity continued despite the equity selloff.

US Stocks Reverse Post-Election Gains

US stocks fell sharply on Thursday, November 5, 2026, as investors reassessed the outlook for artificial intelligence infrastructure spending following Democratic gains in the midterm elections.

The S&P 500 closed at 7,353.73, down 4.36%, recording its steepest daily decline since April 2025. The Nasdaq Composite lost 5.52% to finish at 24,315.00, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,833.06 points, or 3.44%, to 51,523.06. The losses erased the previous session’s post-election rally.

Semiconductor and AI infrastructure shares suffered particularly heavy selling. Nvidia fell 9.26%, AMD lost 17.26% and Micron declined 17.46%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped approximately 12%, while all 11 S&P 500 sectors finished lower.

The breadth of the decline pointed to a wider reduction in risk exposure, even though the AI supply chain remained the session’s main pressure point.

Data Center Approval Risks Weigh on AI Stocks

The election outcome brought greater attention to proposals to limit or pause data center development. Some successful Democratic candidates for state office had supported tighter controls, raising questions about the pace of future construction.

For chipmakers, the potential consequences extend beyond the companies building the facilities. Data centers require power connections, cooling systems, servers, networking equipment and memory before they become operational. Construction delays could therefore shift the timing of equipment purchases across the supply chain.

That creates uncertainty for businesses whose valuations depend on rapid growth in AI-related revenue. Even if customers retain their long-term investment plans, later project completion could postpone expected sales.

However, election results alone do not establish a nationwide construction ban. The eventual business impact depends on state and local decisions, the scope of any restrictions and how existing projects are treated. The market reaction reflects concern about potential policy changes rather than evidence that US data center construction has stopped.

Fed Officials Support Gradual Tightening

Interest rate uncertainty added another complication for equity investors.

Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack said on Thursday that monetary policy would need to become restrictive to return inflation to the central bank’s 2% target. She favored smaller, more frequent adjustments where possible. Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin also supported a gradual approach to further tightening.

These comments represented individual policy views rather than a newly announced Federal Reserve decision. The central bank had left its benchmark rate range at 3.75%–4.00% at its latest meeting, following an increase in September.

Higher borrowing costs can affect infrastructure investment by increasing financing expenses. They can also pressure equity valuations by reducing the present value investors assign to future earnings.

Market pricing nevertheless shifted in a different direction during Thursday’s selloff. Short-term Treasury yields fell, and interest rate traders pushed back the timing of a fully priced additional hike to March. This illustrated how concerns about growth and financial conditions can offset hawkish commentary from policymakers.

Google Investment and Micron Report Highlight Different Project Risks

Corporate developments showed why individual construction issues need to be assessed separately from broader industry demand.

Google announced a long-term $17 billion investment in Wyoming, including its first data center in the state. The Laramie County development involves several energy and infrastructure partners and includes plans for a 702-megawatt fuel cell project with carbon capture and storage.

Google also said the facility would use air cooling to reduce pressure on local water resources. The announcement highlighted the importance of securing electricity and addressing community concerns when developing new computing capacity.

Separately, Micron reportedly suspended plans for a $4.5 billion memory chip plant in Taiwan because of an extended labor dispute. The report was based on unnamed sources and had not been independently confirmed in the coverage reviewed.

The reported Taiwan pause therefore concerns a different issue from potential restrictions on US data centers. A company-specific labor dispute does not, by itself, establish that demand for AI memory has weakened.

Apple Bond Demand Offers a Different Market Signal

Apple was raising approximately $7.5 billion through a seven-part US-dollar bond offering, according to a term sheet reviewed in published reporting.

Separate reporting put orders at approximately $31 billion at one stage, more than four times the final transaction size. The proceeds were intended for general corporate purposes, including share buybacks.

Strong demand suggested that investors remained willing to finance a major technology issuer despite the equity market decline. Bond demand and share prices can diverge because creditors focus on repayment capacity, while shareholders also face changes in earnings expectations and valuation.

Apple’s transaction consequently provides evidence of continued access to financing for one large issuer, although it does not establish that borrowing conditions are equally favorable across the technology sector.

What Could Determine the Market’s Next Move?

The next phase depends partly on whether political proposals translate into concrete restrictions and whether companies revise construction schedules, equipment orders or spending guidance.

Economic data will also influence expectations for inflation, growth and future Fed decisions. Softer activity could reduce anticipated tightening, while persistent price pressures could sustain support for higher rates.

Thursday’s losses reflected a sharp reassessment of the timing, financing and valuation of AI growth. Continued investment announcements provide a counterweight, but firmer evidence on approvals, project delivery and corporate earnings will be needed to assess the lasting business impact.
