gold

Key Takeaways

  • Spot gold traded near $4,395 per troy ounce in early Asian trading on Monday as stronger US employment data weighed on prices.
  • US employers added 162,000 jobs in August, while unemployment held at 4.1%.
  • Friday’s US inflation report is the next major catalyst for gold and Federal Reserve interest-rate expectations.

Gold Trades Near $4,395 in Early Asian Trading

International spot gold, quoted as XAU/USD, fell to approximately $4,395 per troy ounce during the Asian session on September 7. The market update published at 01:33 GMT, or 09:33 Singapore time, showed bullion trading below the closely watched $4,400 threshold as expectations of a September Fed rate increase strengthened. This is a timestamped market quote rather than a live executable price.

Gold’s immediate challenge is whether buyers can restore a sustained foothold above $4,400 as attention shifts from employment figures to inflation.

Stronger US Jobs Data Weighs on Gold

The US economy added 162,000 nonfarm jobs in August, and the unemployment rate remained at 4.1%. July’s payroll increase was revised to 21,000. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% during August and 3.1% from a year earlier.

The payroll result exceeded market expectations of 56,000. Following the release, reported market pricing placed the probability of a September rate increase at roughly 58%, compared with around 50% earlier in Friday’s session.

Higher interest rates can weaken gold’s appeal by increasing the opportunity cost of holding an asset that pays no interest. However, the employment report alone does not settle the policy outlook.

US Inflation Report Becomes the Next Test

The August US Consumer Price Index report is scheduled for Friday, September 11, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time, or 8:30 p.m. Singapore and Beijing time.

A stronger-than-expected inflation reading could reinforce rate-hike expectations and extend pressure on gold. Softer inflation could weaken that outlook and help bullion recover. Around $4,400, price action will offer an initial indication of whether selling pressure is easing; the round-number threshold alone does not establish a confirmed technical floor.
