Introduction

The Zcash Foundation recently released its Q3 report, providing a comprehensive look at the Foundation's financial health, engineering efforts, and other significant activities. This article aims to provide a thorough summary of the report's key takeaways, with a particular focus on the "Shielded Aid Initiative" and technological advancements.

Shielded Aid Initiative: A New Standard for Humanitarian Aid

The Zcash Foundation launched the "Shielded Aid Initiative," an innovative project leveraging Zcash's privacy technology to set a new standard for secure, compliant, and dignified humanitarian aid delivery. With humanitarian organizations distributing between $6 billion and $10 billion in cash assistance annually, the stakes are high. Many aid projects use transparent blockchain technologies, inadvertently exposing recipients' personal data. The "Shielded Aid Initiative" seeks to address this by helping NGOs integrate Zcash's zero-knowledge proof technology into their systems, providing consultations on privacy-preserving digital aid pilots, and advocating for privacy-by-design in humanitarian interventions.

Three-Year Vision for Zcash Community Activities

In addition to the humanitarian initiative, the Zcash Foundation unveiled its three-year vision for Zcash community activities. This vision lays out a roadmap for global learning, collaboration, and networking within the Zcash ecosystem. The strategy supports both online and offline engagement through initiatives aimed at fostering innovation, resource management, and inclusivity. These initiatives include:
  • Zcomm: A new online community builder gathering designed to share practical toolkits for organizing events and boosting engagement.
  • Zcash Developer Summit: A focused gathering on technical coordination and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Zcon7 in 2026: Zcash's flagship in-person conference emphasizing local community connections and engagement.
  • Zcon Voices: A new community event series presenting content in local languages.
Online versions of Zcon, additional developer summits, and ongoing community-led activities will continue in 2027 and 2028, based on participant feedback and evolving needs.

Engineering Updates

The Zcash engineering team released significant updates to Zebra v2.5.0 and Zebra v2.4.2, which included important security patches, an expanded feature set, and performance and compatibility improvements to ensure the robustness and reliability of the Zcash network. Notably, Zebra 2.5.0 successfully implemented and deployed NU6.1 on the Zcash public testnet. Additionally, FROST v2.2.0 was released, incorporating critical security fixes as well as enhancements in compatibility and cryptographic agility.

Other Updates

The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for the Zcash Community Forum were updated. These updates align the forum's documentation with current data protection requirements, clarify cross-regional compliance (including US, EU, and UK standards), and add summary sections to outline key rights, responsibilities, and policies in a clear, user-friendly manner.

Engineering Processes and Future Focus

In Q3, Zcash shifted its engineering processes from a traditional iterative development model, aiming to increase focus, reduce waste, and strengthen team communication. The team is progressing with the deprecation of zcashd and released Zebra v2.4.2 and v2.5.0. Work on NU6.1 has been completed and audited, with positive results and only minor modification suggestions. Next steps for Zcash include completing the zcashd deprecation, continuing to refine the new CI system, and focusing on NU7 as well as performance improvements.

Financial Standing

The Zcash Foundation's Q3 operating expenses totaled $598,131, with a monthly average of approximately $199,377.

Asset Overview

In Q3, Zcash's assets included USD ($1,573,185), USDC ($500,000), ZEC (12,638.82), BTC (41.04), and ETH (11.91), totaling approximately $15,866,134.
